7 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Went to Beauty School

Social

There are many things that go into the beauty industry than just hair and makeup. The beauty school process can look different for everyone depending on which program you choose to enroll in and what state you live in. Here are the top  7 things I wish I knew before I went to beauty school.

1. The Potential Career Options

Beauty school could lead you to so many different career opportunities. Licensed cosmetologists could land a job in careers such as:

  • Salon Owner/Manager
  • Beauty Influencer
  • Salon Stylist
  • Wedding Stylist
  • Runway Stylist
  • Movie Makeup Artist
  • Hair Color Specialist
  • And Many More!

The beauty industry is constantly growing and changing. Remember how beauty influencers were not even a thing just 10 years ago? No matter what you decide on for your path, a cosmetology license could open a world of possibilities for you to explore. The time, dedication, and passion that you put into your potential career could determine the amount of money that you could be making.

2. Entrepreneurship

Along with a vast variety of career options, there is a lot of potential in the business side of the beauty industry. While in beauty school, you may learn a lot about what it takes to become a business owner. You can learn a lot of skills in beauty school that will help you in the world of business, like:

  • Marketing & Networking
  • Salon Management
  • Customer Service
  • Professional Ethics
  • Appointment Booking
  • Current State Laws & Rules
  • And even more!

If you have wanted to own your own salon or begin a career that you have control of, you may have an entrepreneurial mindset! The beauty industry is perfect for starting your own trends and setting your own schedule.

3. The Different Sides of the Beauty Industry

There are more options than just becoming a hair stylist when you are considering going to beauty school. Cosmetology involves all things to do with hair, such as cutting, coloring, and styling. But that is just one of the many paths you can take! Other programs are barbering, hair extensions, microblading, and lash extensions. Each program is unique in its own way and finding the right program for you is important!

4. Financial Aid is Available

Many people do not know that financial aid is available to beauty students. If the cost of school is one thing that may be keeping you from pursuing your dream, there are many scholarships that you can apply for! When you come in for a school tour, be sure to ask our admissions team about any possible scholarships that you could qualify for.

5. Beauty Goes Deeper Than Just Appearance

Being a professional in the beauty industry is more than just making someone look good. It goes much deeper than that! Giving someone a haircut, lash extensions, or fresh color can bring confidence to a person and make them feel better about themselves.

When you are treating your clients, you can spend time talking with them about things going on in their lives. You may even feel like you become a therapist to them! Clients can leave your chair feeling happier about their looks and build a lasting relationship with you. This in turn could make them more likely to come back to you as their stylist which may set you up for financial success!

6. You Could Meet Your Best Friends

A lot of the time you spend in class could be spent around people that you may have never met before. These people share a common interest with you! You may grow alongside your peers for the duration of your schooling and canlearn from one another. You may even help each other out when trying new techniques. Not only could these people become great friends, but you may also share a mutually beneficial relationship for networking once you graduate.

7. There Are Different Requirements in Each State

Beauty school does not have a standard requirement that covers each state. Many states differ in the amount of hours and examination requirements that are necessary to complete licensing. In Utah, you need to attend an accredited school and complete 1600 hours of study, and pass the state exams to earn a cosmetology license. If you attend another school in a different state, the requirements may not align.
